In the United States, education is the right of every child. School is the expected standard for each child's life.
Education in Haiti is quite different. Most public school facilities are overcrowded and grossly underfunded. Only those who can afford a uniform and books can send their children. It is a luxury most cannot afford. Thus the cycle of poverty continues generation after generation. The result is now reflected in Haiti's high national unemployment and illiteracy rate.
Seeing the magnitude of such great needs all around her, Danita knew the ministry of Hope for Haiti Children's Center had to expand. A school was needed to provide education for the children in the surrounding villages, as well as for the orphans already in her care.
Starting in a garage
with only 14 children, the school has now expanded to an enrollment of
over 500 students, and has a principal and 24 teachers. Many children
now come from surrounding areas in which they live in huts and slums.
Most have never attended school before. Now they receive uniforms,
books, hot meals, and a quality education to equip them for a better
life. They are taught God's Word, reading, writing, math, languages and science in
a nurturing environment. Most importantly, they receive love and a
message of hope from the Gospel. (See kindergarten graduation photos.)
In order to continue enrollment at the Hope for Haiti Children's Center School, the children and the parents must comply with required standards. The children must attend school daily, wear and care for the uniforms that are provided, and work diligently at their education.
For only $29 a month, a child can be sponsored
to attend the school.
