On April 25, 2007, a very sick little girl arrived at our door. Rose Mica
was abandoned by her family and was at the point of starvation before
her neighbor found her and took her to the hospital. After spending
eight days in the hospital, the neighbor brought her to the orphanage.
She appeared to be about five years old, but she only weighed 19 lbs. Our hearts broke for Rose Mica as we wondered how long this child had suffered in silence. For many months, she did not speak and could not walk.
The amazing thing about Rose Mica was that in spite of extreme suffering, she was still able to smile at us. Maybe it was a smile of hope - or perhaps she recognized love.
February 2008: After nearly a year of good nutrition and a lot of love, Rose Mica weighed a healthy 44 pounds and as you can see, has a beautiful smile to share.
