Brenda Sapp
While most of us will spend a lifetime determining our life’s purpose, some people are just born knowing. Brenda Sapp, in many ways, is one who always knew.
Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Brenda knew from a very young age that she wanted to work with children. Even as a child herself, she always enjoyed taking care of other kids. At the age of seven, Brenda committed her life to the Lord, and told Him that she would serve Him the best that she knew how. That same year, her second grade teacher took her and her sister on a trip to visit two orphanages. One of the orphanages was very poor, and the children were not well cared for. The other operated as a family, and Brenda immediately noticed a difference in the children. She knew that God was calling her to care for children and to do it with excellence.
At the age of 12, Brenda watched a video on Romanian orphans. Her reaction to it was unbelievable. She began to weep, and then sob, and finally was crying almost uncontrollably. Her mother came into the room to comfort her, and Brenda told her mother that one day, she would love and care for children that were not her own. And so her journey began.
Brenda went to college and, after graduation, began to work for a Christian man as a clerical staff member. For eight years, she worked diligently, determined to practice excellence in her everyday life. Then, during the eighth year, her boss gave her a pay increase and cut her work week back to three days. This was a great blessing to Brenda, because she was now able to dedicate two days a week to her passion, primarily to orphan care.
Through a mutual friend, Brenda knew about Danita’s work in Haiti, and contacted the stateside office to inquire about volunteering. She began to work as a regular volunteer, then became a part-time staff member, then full-time. After working full-time for a year and a half, Danita invited Brenda to come visit Haiti.
From the first time she stepped foot in the country, Brenda knew that this was home. She had not even seen the orphanage yet, but she knew she would be back. One year later, she moved to Haiti, and began her ministry of loving and caring for children.
Now, nearly three years later, Brenda is house mom to our 30 girls and manages the girls' house. She is very organized, very tender and compassionate toward the children, and considers herself fortunate to live in Haiti. “I love it,” she says. “It is such an honor and privilege to help these precious ones grow up.”
